MonitorDaily - News ? CLP Foundation Names Excellence Award ...

The board of directors of the Certified Lease Professional (CLP) Foundation is proud to announce that Theresa Kabot, CLP is the recipient of the first annual Cindy Spurdle Award of Excellence. Kabot was presented a plaque at the National Equipment Financial Association (NEFA) Funding Symposium in Washington, DC by John Rosenlund, CLP of Portfolio Financial Services, president-elect of NEFA and treasurer of the CLP Foundation and by Reid Raykovich, CLP, executive director of the CLP Foundation.

Spurdle was the first and only executive director of the CLP Foundation since its inception in May 2000 until June 2012. The award was created to acknowledge the CLP who has contributed the most to the industry and best represents the CLP ideals.

?The board?s decision to present the first award to Theresa Kabot, CLP, was most definitely the right decision,? Spurdle said. ?Theresa is that special individual and much more. She has given so much of her time and talents to not only promote and introduce the CLP Program to the equipment leasing industry but through her business, K2 Funding, she has worked tirelessly to provide her lessees with the best transactions and funding opportunities she could find to meet their needs. During her two years serving as president of the CLP Foundation, Theresa faced many challenges. She took them head on and turned those challenges into completed projects to grow the Foundation and help to educate other leasing professionals through the CLP Program. She is a perfect example of what the designation Certified Lease Professional stands for.?

The board also announced that John Harders, of Arvest Equipment Finance, is the industry?s latest Certified Lease Professional. The letters ?CLP? behind his name is a visible recognition of his experience in the industry and his professional achievement in having passed the CLP Exam. Harders is the fifth at Arvest to become a CLP.

7 tips for playing 'Borderlands 2' with friends

19 hrs.

You may think that the best thing about "Borderlands 2" is the guns.?

And, well, you might be right. At least in part. Like the first (much loved) "Borderlands" game, "Borderlands 2" is a?first-person-shooter/role-playing?mashup that finds players on a distant planet, scooping up a stunning array of guns (there are?"millions and millions" of them)?that must then be?used to take on a wildly?colorful host of bad guys and even badder creatures.

But give this game some real playtime and you'll discover that, like the first "Borderlands," what really makes?"Borderlands 2" tick is the people you play with.?The new game ??which drops players onto the planet of Pandora for a gun-filled, madcap treasure hunting adventure ??is specially made to be played cooperatively with up to four people. And playing together ??guns blazing ??is an absolute, well, blast.

"Co-op is at the heart of everything we do here," Gearbox Software's?Randy Varnell, the?design producer for "Borderlands 2," told me during a recent interview. And, he said, this time around, the co-op gameplay has been beefed up and polished up?even more.

"It definitely has grown up," he said, explaining that they've added new features such as?online?split-screen gameplay?as?well as the new Bandit Technical?vehicle that lets four players ride and gun together. There's also new enemies that are "far more challenging."?(Watch out for?Terramorphous?the Invincible????a very big, very bad boss?that will take four very skilled, very powerful players to take down.)

Meanwhile,?"You look at how we?ve designed the classes and?abilities, and?you?re going to find even more ways to play with your friends," Varnell said.

But playing well with others isn?t always easy. And so?I asked Varnell for some tips on how players can make the most of their "Borderlands 2"?co-op game. Here was his advice:

1.?Mix?and match the?characters?in your team
There are?four new character classes in "Borderlands 2" ??Axton the?Commando,?Maya the?Siren,?Salvador the Gunzerker and?Zer0 the?Assassin (see top photo). They each have different strengths and different sets of?skills you can put to use?as you play. And while you can play the same character your friends are playing when you play together, Varnell says you?really should mix it up.

"To?get?the most out of co-op, I would say pick a couple of different classes," he said. "And even?more important than that, make a?plan (more on that below). Each class has three skill trees. And?we really spent a lot of time with 'Borderlands 2' making sure each skill tree is?different."

Play?Maya the Siren, for example, and follow the skill tree known as "Harmony" and you'll end up with a character who has?some really great?healing powers that can be a big?help to your team. If you put her?Harmony skills to use, she will be able to instantly revive a dying friend?from a distance and she can even?fire healing bullets at her own teammates.

Meanwhile, Salvador the Gunzerker has a "Brawn" skill tree that ramps up his physical toughness.

"He has a lot of abilities that just turn him into the guy?who can wade into the middle of a fight and take all the damage from the?enemies and distract them," Varnell says. "Which is a really popular tactic?in co-op."

These are the kinds of things you should take some time to think about before you start a?co-op game because it will really pay off in the long run.

"Especially if you?re playing with more than two players, I almost?always say get a Maya in your group and go Harmony," Varnell said, adding, "A Salvador in the Brawn tree and a?Maya in the Harmony tree would be really awesome together."

2.?Have a strategy
"All of our characters have different things they?can do and different ways you can play them," Varnell said. "Talk with your friends. Even if you?re match-making with someone online, we have built-in voice chat now so say hello and say, 'Hey, how are you playing your Salvador? Are you sniping or going?melee?with Zer0? Are you support Maya or damage Maya?'

"Try understanding how the other player is playing their character and adapt?to their play style," Varnell advises. "There are lots of different strategies, but finding one that works in your group is a really great thing to do."

3.?Be?nice?... and share?(sometimes)
You can play "Borderlands 2" split-screen with a friend sitting?beside you on the couch?or you can let?the game's online?matchmaking put you together with strangers. ?But no matter how you're connecting or?who you're playing with,?"Be nice," Varnell says.?"I think that?s a general rule for all of life."

Sure, a little friendly competition is?part of the game.?Because "Borderlands 2" is set on Pandora ??a planet alive with a very wild?wild-west spirit ? the game involves competing?to see who gets the best loot:?awesome guns, cash and other goodies that appear in the game as you explore the world?and defeat enemies.

"When a?gun drops,?we don?t give you two copies. You have to decide who?gets that piece of loot," Varnell says. "We think that?s really important and that's actually?one of the most interesting parts of co-op. But you know, be nice and be?considerate. If someone else is using sniper rifles and a good sniper rifle?drops, you should probably let them have it. And vice?versa. When that shotgun you?ve always wanted drops,?they should probably let you have it.

"It really is one of those great heartwarming, awesome teambuilding experiences," Varnell says. "And I?m not trying to be clich? here. It really is?awesome when you play with a great team and you have that kind of graciousness?and you think of each other."

4.?Save?your friends when they need saving
Pay?attention to what the other people on your team are doing because with all those bullets and baddies flying?they may need you ??and need you badly ??at any moment.

"Borderlands 2" features Second Wind and Revive mechanics. That is, if?during a battle you're badly injured and lose all of your health, you will go into a "down state." At that point,?you have a certain?amount of time? to try to kill an?enemy on your own, which will will revive you and get you?back up in the fight. During that limited time,?you can also?recover if a?friend comes over and revives you.

"Taking??a moment to go and bring a friend back into the fight can?be really, really important," Varnell said. "Having two people up in a fight is going to take the?enemies down faster and it's going to help the fight go a whole lot better."

And for those of you worried about taking damage and risking your own life?while you?revive your teammate, Varnell offers this important tip: "When you are reviving a co-op teammate, you actually take less?damage from enemies."

Being the hero really does pay off.

5.?Look?for those?Class Mods
Class Mods?are items that can be found or bought in Borderlands (check those hidden?lockers and chests, people) or earned for completing missions. They are upgrades that give an added boost to your character's abilities. But perhaps even?more importantly, some of them can give a?boost to?the entire team.

"There are things like Team Health Regeneration, Team Ammo Regeneration ??which is really cool ??and Team Shield Capacity," Varnell says. "What?s really cool,?especially if you play with?a three or four-person?co-op group, is if you hunt down those Class Mods that have?those team abilities on them and everybody has one of those. Man, it makes?your team super powerful."

6.?Take the time to hear the story?and dialog
Varnell points out that, with "Borderlands 2," Gearbox really took the time to beef up and flesh out the story and the world that players experience.

"The?world of Pandora is an?amazingly quirky, fun, odd place. It has lot of story and?dialog," he says. "And a lot of that dialog?is spoken now. In fact, there is some incredible voice acting?in the game."

And so he advises players to take the time to hear the dialog and pay attention to the story. And that means,?when?playing?with friends, you have to be especially careful and respectful of what your teammates are doing.

For example,?"In the hub city of Sanctuary, there are eight or 10?different missions immediately available, and if everyone accepts a?different mission?at the same time you're going to stomp on the order of the dialog," he explains. "It will create a less-than-ideal?experience if you don?t pay attention to what other people are doing.

"So my pro-tip for people who want to engage in the story and appreciate and understand that story,?is take some time. Let the mission play out and?let people hear what?s going on there," he says.

Which leads us to...

7. Enjoy the journey
"It?s a big, wild,?weird place and it's full of fun," Varnell says of "Borderlands 2." "A lot of people are rushing through because they want to be the first to reach?the level cap and they want to be the?first to finish the story, but there?s a lot to experience. This is a big game.?Enjoy it. Enjoy it?at your own?pace."

Artificially intelligent game bots pass the Turing test on Turing's centenary

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? An artificially intelligent virtual gamer created by computer scientists at The University of Texas at Austin has won the BotPrize by convincing a panel of judges that it was more human-like than half the humans it competed against.

The competition was sponsored by 2K Games and was set inside the virtual world of "Unreal Tournament 2004," a first-person shooter video game. The winners were announced this month at the IEEE Conference on Computational Intelligence and Games.

"The idea is to evaluate how we can make game bots, which are nonplayer characters (NPCs) controlled by AI algorithms, appear as human as possible," said Risto Miikkulainen, professor of computer science in the College of Natural Sciences. Miikkulainen created the bot, called the UT^2 game bot, with doctoral students Jacob Schrum and Igor Karpov.

The bots face off in a tournament against one another and about an equal number of humans, with each player trying to score points by eliminating its opponents. Each player also has a "judging gun" in addition to its usual complement of weapons. That gun is used to tag opponents as human or bot.

The bot that is scored as most human-like by the human judges is named the winner. UT^2, which won a warm-up competition last month, shared the honors with MirrorBot, which was programmed by Romanian computer scientist Mihai Polceanu.

The winning bots both achieved a humanness rating of 52 percent. Human players received an average humanness rating of only 40 percent. The two winning teams will split the $7,000 first prize.

The victory comes 100 years after the birth of mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing, whose "Turing test" stands as one of the foundational definitions of what constitutes true machine intelligence. Turing argued that we will never be able to see inside a machine's hypothetical consciousness, so the best measure of machine sentience is whether it can fool us into believing it is human.

"When this 'Turing test for game bots' competition was started, the goal was 50 percent humanness," said Miikkulainen. "It took us five years to get there, but that level was finally reached last week, and it's not a fluke."

The complex gameplay and 3-D environments of "Unreal Tournament 2004" require that bots mimic humans in a number of ways, including moving around in 3-D space, engaging in chaotic combat against multiple opponents and reasoning about the best strategy at any given point in the game. Even displays of distinctively human irrational behavior can, in some cases, be emulated.

"People tend to tenaciously pursue specific opponents without regard for optimality," said Schrum. "When humans have a grudge, they'll chase after an enemy even when it's not in their interests. We can mimic that behavior."

In order to most convincingly mimic as much of the range of human behavior as possible, the team takes a two-pronged approach. Some behavior is modeled directly on previously observed human behavior, while the central battle behaviors are developed through a process called neuroevolution, which runs artificially intelligent neural networks through a survival-of-the-fittest gauntlet that is modeled on the biological process of evolution.

Networks that thrive in a given environment are kept, and the less fit are thrown away. The holes in the population are filled by copies of the fit ones and by their "offspring," which are created by randomly modifying (mutating) the survivors. The simulation is run for as many generations as are necessary for networks to emerge that have evolved the desired behavior.

"In the case of the BotPrize," said Schrum, "a great deal of the challenge is in defining what 'human-like' is, and then setting constraints upon the neural networks so that they evolve toward that behavior.

"If we just set the goal as eliminating one's enemies, a bot will evolve toward having perfect aim, which is not very human-like. So we impose constraints on the bot's aim, such that rapid movements and long distances decrease accuracy. By evolving for good performance under such behavioral constraints, the bot's skill is optimized within human limitations, resulting in behavior that is good but still human-like."

Miikkulainen said that methods developed for the BotPrize competition should eventually be useful not just in developing games that are more entertaining, but also in creating virtual training environments that are more realistic, and even in building robots that interact with humans in more pleasant and effective ways.

Watchdog: Democracy declined worldwide in 2011

By NBC News staff and wire reports

WASHINGTON -- Democratic governance declined throughout the world in 2011, showing that gains made in the Middle East and North Africa during the Arab Spring are very fragile and in its chaotic aftermath leaders may slip back into authoritarian rule, a U.S. watchdog group said Monday.

Only Tunisia has improved markedly its overall governance score among the Middle East and North African countries that were surveyed in the latest "Countries at the Crossroads" report published by Freedom House. Bahrain slipped backward and Egypt edged up only slightly.

Across the world, declines in the quality of governance far exceeded improvements, led by a worsening of government accountability and the rule of law in civil and criminal matters, the U.S. research group said.

'Slip back' to authoritarianism?
The deterioration raises an alarm for pro-democracy advocates who had hoped that the overthrow of brutal authoritarian regimes in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt marked a dramatic breakthrough, said Vanessa Tucker, project director.

"It is unclear whether the popular dismissal of the old models of authoritarianism will translate into enduring public support for novice representative government and contentious institutional reforms," she said.

"There are limits to citizens' patience with respect to political instability, economic disruption and physical insecurity, and the desire to return to a less chaotic environment may allow the leaders to slip back into the familiar habits of authoritarian rule," she said.

Tucker also said the recent unrest in many Muslim countries triggered by an anti-Islam video demonstrated the weakness of governments in many parts of the Middle East and North Africa.

Rights group blasts 'repressive' crackdown in Tunisia, birthplace of Arab Spring

"After decades of corrupt and repressive rule, citizens in these states are facing brutal and ineffective security forces, habitually divisive and confrontational politics, and a lack of productive avenues through which to lodge their grievances and assert their rights," she said in a statement.

The Freedom House measure of governance is used widely by development groups in helping them decide whether a government can use foreign assistance effectively. The report covers the period from April 2009 to December 2011.

Four criteria are used to assess the 72 countries surveyed in Countries at the Crossroads: accountability and public voice; civil liberties; rule of law; and anti-corruption and transparency. Half of the countries are updated each year, while Egypt and Tunisia were surveyed for both of the past two years.

Freedom House says a country score of five out of a total of seven is the minimum standard for effective democratic governance, which it views as essential to an open, just and prosperous society.

Crowds of angry protesters showed up in Kabul, Afghanistan and Jakarta, Indonesia. The violent uprising followed a deadly weekend marking the deaths of eight International Security Assistance Force members. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

Tunisia sees gains
In the latest report, Tunisia improved in all categories led by a sharp rise in accountability and public voice, pushing its overall country ranking to 4.11 from around 2.36 before the ouster of President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011. One area of concern the report flagged was women's rights, saying Islamist political parties have stoked fears of a rollback in existing rights.

While it uses monitors and experts on the ground and an advisory board, such rankings can be controversial and there have been accusations of imposing subjective and Western viewpoints.

Accountability and public voice also rose in Egypt after the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, but other measures were flat leading to only a small rise to 2.25 from 1.98 the prior year, despite open elections.

Restrictions on the media, hostility to non-governmental organizations and efforts to restrain women's political activity through "virginity checks" by the military were cited as areas of concern.

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin discusses the changes in the Middle East and North African countries.

Bahrain, once seen as one of the more developed countries in the region, saw its score decline across the board, pulling its country average down to 2.03, the level of pre-uprising Syria, from a recent peak of 3.27 in 2004.

Other findings in the report were:

  • Latin America saw increases in violence and organized crime hurting scoring in the countries surveyed there. The trend included high rates of violence against journalists in Mexico and Honduras, and growing interference by organized crime in the electoral process in Guatemala and Mexico.

A video "mockumentary" that shows children as kidnappers, corrupt cops and drug traffickers sparked a fierce debate in violence-torn Mexico. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

  • Asia suffered major setbacks in the face of power grabs by the executive branch and ruling parties, particularly in Sri Lanka and Vietnam.?
  • Freedom of expression was also constricted as the Indonesian and Cambodian governments and others cracked down on the media.
  • South Africa suffered score declines from the increasing dominance of the ruling African National Congress and the government's efforts to limit media freedom.?
  • Electoral abuses in Malawi and Uganda, in addition to growing corruption in Tanzania, were also responsible for significant score drops in African countries assessed in the latest report.

Paul Ryan Says Election Not Just Obama Referendum

DOVER, N.H. - Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan said that he and Mitt Romney owe the American people "an alternative to vote for" with specific ideas and solutions, rather than making the election only a referendum on President Obama's job performance.

Asked by a self-described independent why she shouldn't sit this election out, Ryan said voters "have to decide what kind of country do you want."

"We can change this. Yes, there are differences, and you have to get rid of Barack Obama if you want to fix these problems," Ryan, a seven-term congressman from Wisconsin, said. "This idea of consolidating power in Washington, this idea of taxing people, families and businesses more, of borrowing more money and regulating more and spending money on cronies, on people who are connected, this doesn't work. What works is liberty, what works is free enterprise, what works is sound economic policies."

"It comes down to a core philosophy, and the principles that we are using to apply to the problems of the day - to solve our problems, to get back on track - are the principles that are timeless, that built this country. Liberty, freedom, free enterprise, self-determination, government by consent of the governed," he added. "The government works for us, not the other way around."

Ryan said he and Romney have proposals to stimulate economic growth and reform entitlements, not with the intent to harm the less fortunate, but to give everyone a shot at the American ideal.

"What Mitt Romney and I are talking about, what we're proposing, is a very simply idea: We've got to stop spending money we just don't have," he said. "The American system of limited government and free enterprise has done more to help the poor, has done more to uplift people out of lives of dependency and on to lives of self-sufficiency, has done more to create opportunity than any other economic system ever designed. We don't wanna replace that. We want to renew and revitalize that. That is the American idea of economic opportunity."

Even though the Romney-Ryan campaign appeared to stumble after some conservatives called for changes to the campaign and a string of candid videos of Mitt Romney speaking at a fundraiser were released on the internet this week, Ryan did not stray far from his regular campaign stump speech. Instead, Ryan was focused on contrasting each campaign's economic policies.

"We can't keep doing this. This debt is getting out of our control," he said. "Politicians from both parties over many decades have made lots of empty promises to voters to get re-elected, putting it on the nation's credit card, consigned with giving it to the next generation, and if we don't get this under control pretty soon, these empty promises will quickly become broken promises."

Ryan began the day in Boston, where he stopped at campaign headquarters before heading to New Hampshire. A spokesman says he "just dropped in to say hello to headquarters staff and thank them for their hard work."

After taping a number of interviews with local television stations, Ryan will fly to Greensboro, N.C., for a rally with supporters Tuesday evening.

Advocates: 39 states' obesity rates to pass 50 pct

Graphic shows projected obesity rates in states across the nation

Graphic shows projected obesity rates in states across the nation

(AP) ? A group campaigning against obesity predicts that by 2030 more than half the people in 39 states will be obese ? not merely overweight, but obese.

Mississippi is expected to retain its crown as the fattest state in the nation for at least two more decades. The report predicts 67 percent of that state's adults will be obese by 2030; that would be an astounding increase from Mississippi's current 35 percent obesity rate.

The new projections were released Tuesday by Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The two organizations regularly report on obesity to raise awareness, and they rely on government figures.

But in this case, their dismal forecast goes beyond the 42 percent national obesity level that federal health officials project by 2030.

About two-thirds of Americans are overweight now. That includes those who are obese, a group that accounts for about 36 percent. Obesity rates have been holding steady in recent years.

Trust for America's Health officials said their projections are based in part on state-by-state surveys by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1999 through 2010. Those numbers come from what residents say are their height and weight when asked by interviewers over the phone. People aren't always so accurate about that.

The researchers then looked at other national data in which residents were actually weighed and measured and they made adjustments for how much people in each state might fudge the truth about their weight. They also tried to apply recent trends in obesity rates, along with other factors, to make the predictions.

Officials with Trust for America's Health said they believe their projections are reasonable.

But their outlook suggests that even in the thinnest state ? Colorado, where about one-fifth of residents are obese ? 45 percent are predicted to be obese by 2030. That means that every state would have an obesity rate higher than 44 percent.

Perhaps more surprising ? Delaware is expected to have obesity levels nearly as high as Mississippi. Delaware currently is in the middle of the pack when it comes to self-reported obesity rates.

The report didn't detail why some states' rates were expected to jump more than others. It also didn't calculate an average adult obesity rate for the entire nation in 2030, as the CDC did a few months ago when it predicted 42 percent overall. But a researcher who worked on the Trust for America's Health study acknowledged that report's numbers point toward a figure close to 50 percent.

CDC officials declined to comment on the new report.

Whichever estimates you trust most, it's clear that the nation's weight problem is going to continue, escalating the number of cases of diabetes, heart disease and stroke, said Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for America's Health.

By 2030, medical costs from treating obesity-related diseases are likely to increase by $48 billion, to $66 billion per year, his report said.

The focus of so much of the ongoing debate about health care is over controlling costs, Levi said. "... We can only achieve it by addressing obesity. Otherwise, we're just tinkering around the margins."

Letters: Victims of crime ? and of society - September-10-12
Source: The Guardian - Crime

It may have come as a shock to some that Peter Bowers should express a kind of view we don't expect a judge to hold (Inquiry into judge's 'brave burglars' comment in court, 7 September). It is, is it not, a responsibility of those with both influence and a conscience to occasionally use it and poke the political establishment. My son is currently serving a prison sentence for burglary. When he broke into houses he didn't feel brave, he felt frightened. His fear was overridden by a physical and psychological craving for heroin. Few people other than addicts and recovering addicts fully comprehend the power of class A drugs. The ongoing tragedy is that those who burgle and those who are burgled are both victims of a society that refuses to address realities. The real villains are the crowd-pleasing politicians who never show courage and avoid tackling the issues because the outcomes may offend the Daily Mail. Name and address supplied

MARILLION Sounds That Can't Be Made music review by Warthur

5 stars Living in the UK isn't without its advantages; it means, for instance, that when the pre-orders of Sounds That Can't Be Made got mailed out the other day my copy arrived with great speed. I've spent the whole weekend giving it an in-depth listen and can happily report that this is the top-flight followup to Marbles with Somewhere Else and Happiness Is the Road weren't (and, to be fair, I don't think they were intended to be).

Of course, you could guess from a look at the track times that Marillion are back in one of their proggier moods this time around, with three songs at over 10 minutes (and the first song on the album a 17 minute monster!). These three songs are effectively the tentpoles that hold the album up, being long proggy pieces in the tradition of The Invisible Man or Neverland from Marbles. It's ironic, actually, that Marillion have spent so much energy trying to distance themselves from tracks like Grendel when in fact in the H-era they've produced more long-form tracks than they ever did with Fish - though all of these songs are miles away from the monsters, magic, and mild Genesis borrowing of that track.

Album opener Gaza might well prove to be one of the most controversial tracks of Marillion's career - not for its musical content, but for its lyrics and themes. Directly tackling the conflicts between Israel and the Palestinians is a profoundly difficult tightrope to walk, but to Steve Hogarth's credit his lyrics are unusually nuanced when it comes to rock songs about Gaza. It helps, I think that he's spent time talking to both Palestinians and Israelis (as he is careful to state in the album booklet) about the situation, and that though the lyrics show how a character born into a hopeless situation can be radicalised and turn to violence, at the same time it's fairly clear that H considers violent action utterly counter-productive at best, and directly contributing to the continuation and escalation of the cycle at worst ("For every hot-head stone ten come back").

As the song says, the situation documented has no easy answers ("nothing is ever simple"), and H is careful to note that there are "grieving mothers on both sides of the wire", and the main thrust of the song seems to be a lament that there have been so many generations of children born into and growing up in this conflict. I think on the whole these are sentiments that only the most hardline partisans in the conflict could disagree with, but I'm sure there'll be plenty of people from all sorts of backgrounds who find the song distasteful - some will say it's too sympathetic to the Palestinians, some will say it's not condemnatory enough of the Israelis, and so on. At the same time, I think Marillion were right to tackle the subject matter, since in many respects the song is a thematic descendant of Forgotten Sons from Script For a Jester's Tear - both taking a "peace first, ask questions later" approach to the conflicts they centre around.

Some may question the booklet's endorsement of the Hoping Foundation, which is an organisation whose declared aim is to fund projects providing aid to Palestinian children; it seems to be something of a prog cause celebre, with David Gilmour and Roger Waters having got together in 2010 to support it, but on the other hand I get very mixed messages about it when I try to research its position; I suppose this just illustrates how difficult the subject is.

The rest of the album is somewhat less heavy going. The middle tentpole, Montreal, is a 14 minute tribute to the city written as an account of one of the band's visits there on tour. Perhaps it's a little self-indulgent - a gushy blog post in the form of a song - but the general theme of discovering a city which is so welcoming and so supportive of you that it feels like a home away from home means that it is at least a bit more thematically deep than "thank you Montreal, we love our Canadian Marillion weekends". Closing number The Sky Above the Rain is an exploration of relationship difficulties and lack of communication, where the two protagonists are a woman who's stopped loving her partner but doesn't want to talk about it and the man in question, who's desperate to communicate about it and despises living a lie. All three of the tentpole songs are tour de forces as far as the band's performance goes, with Mark Kelly's keyboard soundscapes and Steve Rothery's guitar solos as always being a particular treat.

As for the shorter songs, the most notable one is probably Pour My Love, which features lyrics from John Helmer, who helped H out with the lyrics for the albums from Seasons' End to Marillion.com and makes a welcome return here to provide the words for this rather soulful song - I don't think it's quite the "Marillion meets Prince" song that it's been described as but it's certainly creeping in that direction. The band don't seem to have been tempted to include any songs which don't support the generally fairly progressive tone of the album, with even lead single Power having more depth than you might think at first listen and some occasionally rather Steve Hackett-sounding guitar from Steve Rothery (who offers his own take on Hackett's distinctive "weeping guitar" sound at points).

In short, if you're a fan of H-era Marillion and consider Marbles to be one of their better albums, you're highly likely to see this one as a return to form. I'll be seeing them live next week and apparently they intend to use Gaza as the opening number for their UK tour: I can't wait.

Double Dutch Dog Blows Your Mind

Double Dutch Dog Blows Your Mind

My name is samantha Valle. Im from Long island new york. The dog is GERONIMO and shes a 2 year old cattle dog mix. could be mixed with border collie or kelpie, who knows! I pulled her out of a pound in Missouri while I was performing there 2 summers ago. She was 3 months old. Mo's specialty is tricks. She loves to train tricks, but also has a knack for agility and frisbee. I have 7 dogs total, all mixes of herding dogs, which are my favorite. I travel around the country performing with STUNT DOG PRODUCTIONS, creators of the theater show THE STUNT DOG EXPERIENCE and the state fair shows THE EXTREME CANINES SHOW. We perform all across the country and also have performed in Canada. Now, about this trick. This trick took 5 straight weeks until it was perfect for me to call complete. I practiced it every single day, several hours a day. Now, there are alot of hours in a day, folks, and I like frequent breaks (although mo wonders why we are stopping and not jumping all day long ;) Mo will work all day, she loves to EAT!! This is the first time Ive trained this specific trick so it was all trial and error. There was no specific steps I really took that made a huge difference. All I can really remember doing is trying a bunch of different things, rewarding her small successes until the trick was complete. To the lovely people that are asking about the stick on the ground. I trained Mo to jump behind the stick. It has nothing to do with the ropes itself. This trick is so amazing because of all the things going on at once. Think about it....she has to find that "sweet spot" in the rope where she can jump in, wait for the perfect time to jump in, watch the board on the floor and the ropes at the same time so she knows where and when to jump in, then she must time the jump perfectly, land, and immediately find the rhythm of the ropes and jump. shes just not running and gunning it. she waits for the right time (which through hrs of practice, has figured out) and jumps in. The stick is there to keep her in the middle of the ropes, as i found out by teaching my other dogs to jump with just one rope, that they all want to jump right on top of you or into you really closely. My vision for this trick is exactly how you see it now....a dog that runs and jumps into 2 ropes while staying in the middle as if it were jumping like a human. Im happy with the end result. Mo is happy to jump, and I hope you all are happy to view her video and watch her having a good time. This trick was originally trained so I can bring a new trick to THE STUNT DOG EXPERIENCE show we will be performing at DOLLYWOOD theme park this summer, June to the first week in August. I wasnt going to put out a video at all. I was going to wait and debut the trick on stage at dollywood. Then my first jump rope dog died and I became extremely depressed. 10 years ago I got TESS for my birthday and that dog molded me into the trainer I am today. My boyfriend suggested I put out the video anyway because its such a fun trick. The entire video was filmed by my friend STEVE COLLIER and the video is dedicated to the dog that jump started my training career....TESS, who appears in a few of my earlier videos. The guy opposite me, turning the ropes is my boyfriend...SCOTT LEVY. Yes. hes scrawny. We get the memo, thank you. Love him to death and scrawny guys are the way to go ;) If you are going to sit here and bitch about the font, your just lame. if you dont like my music choice, your on the internet. Your on a computer. Each one of these devices has a volume button.....utilize it and quit your bitching :) thank you. Now, about that yard. Its dirt. Its grass. Its HIDEOUS, i know. See that big ass house in the background, folks? Its brand new. Just moved back into it late november due to construction. After they bulldozed the top half of my house and built upwards, adding 6 new rooms, they decided to get to work on the yard. I filmed this as work was being done on the yard.since ive been a lazy ass on this channel lately and apparently only seem to put out one video per year, next years video will be with a lush green field of grass with trees along the fence, an inground pool thats uncovered that you will jealous of, and my dogs doing what they do best...being awesome while having a good time! :) THIS VIDEO IS DEDICATED TO TESS, THE DOG THAT TAUGHT ME TO JUMP ROPE. Sam :) LIKE double dutch dog on facebook. http://www.facebook.com/DoubleDutchDog LIKE stunt dog productions on facebook http://www.facebook.com/Stuntdogshow also check out STUNTDOG.COM
