How To Innovate In China - Business Insider

A common complaint about China is that while it may be great at copying products (and sometimes not even so great at that), it will never be a real innovator and develop new products.

But Kai Fu Lee, the former head of Google China, disagrees in a?recent LinkedIn post.?He says that we need to broaden our definition of innovation beyond sea-change developments to include smaller, but still important, creative improvements.

He emphasizes that innovation in China, much like many endeavors in China, needs to be understood and approached from a Chinese context. And knowing where to look for Chinese innovation and how to maximize their strengths in innovation can be very valuable for a company.

He goes on to list a couple areas where Chinese led innovation have a lot of potential:

  • Areas with Chinese government subsidies - like alternative energy?
  • Areas where innovation "can be derived by exhaustive experimentation" - like pharmaceuticals

He also lists a couple of good approaches to innovation in China:

  • Hard-work and solid foundation for long-term development as opposed to risk-taking and out-of-the-box approaches for immediate innovation
  • Western-trained researchers leading teams in China

Lee's points are very much in line with the standard approach to China as a place where hard-work and long-term approaches are prioritized but he clarifies how these can be utilized for innovation.

The top 20 airports for TSA theft

Your suitcase has been tagged and whisked away for a TSA security check before being loaded onto a plane en route to your final destination. How safe are the belongings inside? The TSA has fired nearly 400 employees for allegedly stealing from travelers, and for the first time, the agency is revealing the airports where those fired employees worked.

Newly released figures provided to ABC News by the TSA in response to a Freedom of Information Act request show that, unsurprisingly, many of the country's busiest airports also rank at the top for TSA employees fired for theft.

Sixteen of the top 20 airports for theft firings are also in the top 20 airports in terms of passengers passing through.

At the head of the list is Miami International Airport, which ranks twelfth in passengers but first in TSA theft firings, with 29 employees terminated for theft from 2002 through December 2011. JFK International Airport in New York is second with 27 firings, and Los Angeles International Airport is third with 24 firings. JFK ranks sixth in passenger traffic, while LAX is third. Chicago, while second in traffic, ranked 20th in theft firings.

The four airports listed in the TSA's top 20 list of employee firings for theft that aren't also among the FAA's top 20 for passenger activity are Salt Lake City International, Washington Dulles, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International, and San Diego International.

The top airports across the U.S. for TSA employees fired for theft are:

1. Miami International Airport (29)

2. JFK International Airport (27)

3. Los Angeles International Airport (24)

4. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (17)

5. Las Vegas-McCarren International Airport (15)

6. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and New York-Laguardia Airport (14 each)

8. Newark Liberty, Philadelphia International, and Seattle-Tacoma International airports (12 each)

11. Orlando International Airport (11)

12. Houston-George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Salt Lake City International Airport (10 each)

14. Washington Dulles International Airport (9)

15. Detroit Metro Airport and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (7)

17. Boston-Logan International, Denver International and San Diego International airports (6)

20. Chicago O'Hare International Airport (5)

During a recent ABC News investigation, an iPad left behind at a security checkpoint at the Orlando airport was tracked as it moved 30 miles away to the home of the TSA officer last seen handling it.

WATCH the 'Nightline' report on 'The Case of the Missing iPad'

Confronted two weeks later by ABC News, the TSA officer, Andy Ramirez, at first denied having the missing iPad, but ultimately turned it over after blaming his wife for taking it from the airport. Ramirez was later fired by the TSA.

PHOTOS: A Rogues' Gallery of TSA Agents

The iPad was one of ten purposely left behind at TSA checkpoints at major airports with a history of theft by government screeners, as part of an ABC News investigation into the TSA's ongoing problem with theft of passenger belongings. The other nine iPads were returned to ABC News after being left behind.

The agency disputes that theft is a widespread problem, however, saying the number of officers fired "represents less than one-half of one percent of officers that have been employed" by TSA.

Bigfoot vandalizes Winnebago and other claims

A Pennsylvania man who accused Bigfoot of vandalizing his 1973 Winnebago earlier this month is just one of a long history of people who have blamed the hairy humanoid for attacking personal property and dwellings.

John Reed, a Bigfoot enthusiast, claims that during a camping trip he and his girlfriend saw a tall, dark, hairy figure walk past their camper window at night. According to one news story, Reed said the Bigfoot "threw rocks at his mobile home's outside light to escape discovery."

This explanation doesn't make sense; if the Bigfoot didn't want to be noticed, it presumably wouldn't have walked right past the Winnebago's window with two people inside, nor thrown rocks at the camper. The creature could simply have avoided the campsite, or kept walking into the darkness if it did not want to be detected, instead of standing and throwing rocks at an exterior light.

    1. Hear the whale that talked like a human

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: The noise sounds like someone singing a "dum-diddy-dah" tune ? but it's actually the voice of a white beluga whale, mimicking human conversation by blurping air through its blowhole.

    2. Bigfoot vandalizes Winnebago and other claims
    3. Beetles dance on poop balls to keep cool
    4. Earthquake experts condemn manslaughter verdict

Perhaps the strangest part of the story is that Reed, who founded a Bigfoot hunting group and claims to have seen it twice before, did not photograph the creature. [ Bigfoot, Nessie & the Kraken: Cryptozoology Quiz ]

Reed is not alone
As odd as this story seems, Reed is not the first to claim to find traces and evidence of what they assume must have been a Bigfoot, though not clearly seeing or photographing it at the time. The logic goes like this: I don't know what else it might have been, so it must have been Bigfoot.

It is well known that wild animals attack vehicles such as car and RVs ? especially if they can smell food inside. And many animals, including bears and raccoons, can be very clever and persistent in trying to get into vehicles and other containers. Trashcans in national parks have specially designed latching mechanisms to thwart feral intruders.?

There have been other cases where unknown creatures attack vehicles, though those attacks have typically occurred at night and/or while the occupants were away. Strangely, Bigfoot are never credibly accused of attacking people; just about every other animal in the world has been known to attack humans at some point, including cats, dogs, deer, moose, bear, boar, elk, cougar, birds, fish, and so on. Not so for Bigfoot ? a fact that raises suspicion among many skeptics.

Bigfoot have been claimed to vandalize not only dwellings but also trees. In October 2011, Bigfoot researcher and biologist John Bindernagel visited western Siberia to examine evidence of the Yeti (the Russian version of Bigfoot). He claimed to have found evidence that the creature broke trees and branches. "Twisted trees like this have also been observed in North America and they could fit with the theory that Bigfoot makes nests," Bindernagelsaid in an interview with the British tabloid "The Sun."

In another mysterious incident that some attribute to Bigfoot or another unknown creature, in 2008 a South Carolina couple claimed that something vandalized their vehicle, leaving mysterious bite marks and ripping out part of the fender on their 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan.

Famous 1924 Bigfoot Attack
The most famous case of a Bigfoot attack allegedly occurred at a place called Ape Canyon, near Mount St. Helens, Washington. In 1924, a group of five miners working at the site were besieged by a group of "ape men." One of the miners, a man named Fred Beck, claimed that they sighted a group of Bigfoot high above them on the edge of the canyon. The miners then spent a terrified night holed up in their cabin, during which the Bigfoot bombarded the cabin with rocks, and, they claimed, even tried to break the door in. The miners couldn't get a good look at the Bigfoot?partly because it was dark and partly because they could only see outside through small cracks in the door and walls.

The incident was cited for years in Bigfoot lore as a classic Bigfoot attack, and the details were exaggerated with each retelling. For example a few dozen fist-size rocks that rained down on the roof and walls became "giant boulders" in some versions of the story. Later research found that the famous Ape Canyon Bigfoot attack was not a hoax ? but nor was it real: it was instead a combination of a prank and misperceptions.

It seems that the "Bigfoot" were local YMCA youth from nearby Spirit Lake, who had a long tradition of throwing stones (including pumice rocks, which can be deceptively light for their size) down into the canyon from above. The kids would not have known the miners were in the canyon, nor even that they were necessarily hitting a cabin in the darkness far below. When the miners looked up they would have only seen silhouettes of figures far above them. It must surely have been a terrifying experience for the miners, and it's easy to see how the Bigfoot story could have been spawned. [ Who Believes in Bigfoot? ]

Could something similar explain the recent incident in Pennsylvania? Reed says he believes that the damage to his Winnebago wasn't caused by a group of pranking kids, though police think that's exactly what it was and are treating the case as ordinary vandalism. If Reed wants to file an insurance claim for the damages to his camper, he might want to go with that story.

The debate was the last major opportunity for either candidate to appeal directly to millions of voters - especially the roughly 20 percent who have yet to make up their minds or who could still switch their support at the Nov. 6 election.

World hot spots like?Libya?and Iran were likely to figure prominently, with Romney seeking to put pressure on Obama over what the Republican considers weak responses to the killing of the U.S. ambassador to?Libya?on Sept. 11 and Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Bleeding Heartland:: Ten links related to Domestic Violence ...

Helpguide.org provides a useful list of signs that you're in an abusive relationship. The troubles often don't start with physical violence.
Domestic abuse often escalates from threats and verbal abuse to violence. And while physical injury may be the most obvious danger, the emotional and psychological consequences of domestic abuse are also severe. Emotionally abusive relationships can destroy your self-worth, lead to anxiety and depression, and make you feel helpless and alone. No one should have to endure this kind of pain-and your first step to breaking free is recognizing that your situation is abusive. Once you acknowledge the reality of the abusive situation, then you can get the help you need.

National Domestic Violence Hotline numbers: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) TTY 1-800-787-3224

The Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence offers advice for victims here. That organization also provides services geared toward women who have immigrated to this country.

Battered immigrant women and children are among the most marginalized victims of domestic abuse in this country and face greater obstacles escaping violence. ICADV is committed to providing domestic violence legal responses to clients who are undocumented immigrants or at risk of losing documentation due to abuse, as well as victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and trafficking.

Helpguide.org offers help for abused and battered women here, including advice on making a plan to leave, being prepared for emergencies, and phone and internet safety tips.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence posted internet safety information here but warns,

Taking all of the actions on this page may not prevent an abuser from discovering your email and Internet activity. The safest way to find information on the Internet is to go to a safer computer. Some suggestions would be your local library, a friend's house or your workplace. Other safety suggestions: Change your password often, do not pick obvious words or numbers for your password, and make sure to include a combination of letters and numbers for your password.

Experts advise survivors of domestic violence to "take extra precautions to proect themselves from abusers who use identity as a means of power and control."

For those with a friend or loved one who may be in an abusive relationship, here are eight ways to support a domestic violence victim.

Helpguide.org also lists many "warning signs of domestic violence and abuse" near the bottom of this page.

The Iowa Judicial Branch has an overview of state criminal and civil laws pertaining to domestic violence here.

The American Bar Association provides resources for attorneys working on cases involving domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking.

Cee Lo Green's ?Run Rudolph Run?: Watch The Music Video, Err ...

We?ve barely finished putting together our Halloween How-To Costume Guides, but Cee Lo Green already has his mind on Christmas. The Voice coach tweeted on Wednesday ?Here?s another one to get you in the spirit early? with a link to the music video ? excuse us, ?audio visualizer? ? for ?Run Rudolph Run?. We can understand how the stylish crooner is already thinking about the holidays (his Xmas album?Magic Moments drops October 30), but the video isn?t exactly helping the seemingly premature yultide cheer. Watch as models dressed in Santa hats, tiny white tops and an assortment of American Apparel bottoms ride around NYC in a purple Rolls Royce convertible and sprinkle glitter over the Big Apple.

We thought Cee Lo stayed pretty close to Chuck Berry?s original version of ?Run Rudolph Run? (which will forever remind us of?Home Alone), what do you think of the cover??
